Sligo Children’s Community Garden
Sep 23, 2025 | Biodiversity, Community Stories, Sligo
Born from a shared idea, SCCG was created to give a welcoming outdoor space where children and families can connect with nature. They can learn about sustainability, and bring about a sense of community. The garden is in the heart of Sligo, and it is a place where biodiversityrich and living nature does really well. The main idea of “grow your own” is taken on by everyone, and where people can improve their awareness of their environment.
Where?
Sligo Town
Who started this action?
Sligo Children’s Community Garden (SCCG) was set up in the summer of 2020 by local Sligo people: Fiona, Jenny, Kylie, and Trisha. Ruth joined them in 2021 when the tots group started.

Highlights
Wonders of Worms with the Irish Hospice Fund:
This project used plants and nature to look at ideas about life and death. It got people involved through telling stories and ‘regenerative practices’doing things in a way that brings life, making things new again.
Story and Tale Sharing:
Funded by the Community Foundation for Ireland, this ‘podcast’short recordings and programmes you can listen to on your phone project brought together the Cranmore Women’s Group and SCCG to collect and share their stories about nature and gardening.
Why this matters
- It is very important to promote biodiversity to both the young and old in the family
- The “grow your own” idea helps people think more about where our food comes from. This improves how we think about eating good healthy food.
- When you grow things to eat in a garden it makes you think more about your environment, about keeping nature healthy so you can be healthy too.
- This garden looks at the social and community part of the project very closely. It shows how we grow things best when we are together: young and old, experts and learners.
- It also shows that gardening and growing together makes you feel better in yourself.
