Westmeath County Council has named Mullingar Town as the County’s official ‘Decarbonisation’reducing the amount of Carbon Dioxide emissionsZone (DZ) Zone (DZ). According to the Westmeath Climate Action Plan 2024–2029, the Mullingar DZ will focus on both climate change mitigationreducing the problems caused by climate change and adaptationcoping with the affects of something , with a strong focus on protecting and improving local biodiversity.

The Westmeath Climate Action Team is currently in the early stages of developing the Mullingar Town DZ initiative. The vision for the Decarbonising Zone is that:  “Mullingar will become an important testbedsomewhere you try out new ideas to see if they work for Westmeath’s transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future, in line with the objectives of the Westmeath Climate Action Plan and Ireland’s national goal to achieve carbon neutralitywhen the amount of carbon you produce is the same or less than the amount you take-in by 2050.” Westmeath Climate Action Plan 2024–2029

6.1 tCO₂e per person per year

Mullingar Town is an urbanbuilt-up like in a town or city area with a population of about 22,667 people (Census 2022). Total estimated carbon emissions for the town are 138,421 tCO₂e, which is about 6.1 tCO₂e per person.

Community Engagement

The Westmeath Climate Action Team has already begun meaningful engagement with the Mullingar Sustainable Energy Community (SEC)  to look into opportunities and to shape future plans for the Decarbonising Zone. Looking ahead, the Climate Action Team plans to expand community engagement in 2026 and to formally launch the Mullingar Decarbonising Zone programme in the summer. These efforts will support Mullingar’s transition to a carbon-neutral future and demonstrate practical ways communities can lead in climate action.
